Requirements

  1. At least a bachelor’s degree in any field, or an associate degree in safety, health or environment (with at least four SH&E courses — 12 semester / 18 quarter hours — in ASP blueprint domains).
  2. One year of safety, health and environment experience, at least half of it preventive, professional-level work with breadth and depth of safety duties.
  3. Pass the ASP examination.
  4. Keep the credential active: annual renewal fee plus recertification points every five years.
  5. Degrees from outside the United States are evaluated for U.S. equivalency during the application.
  6. You must disclose any criminal convictions or actions against a professional licence or credential.

Application process

  1. Create an account in BCSP’s “My Profile” portal and start a new application from the Applications menu.
  2. Submit the application and pay the application fee; BCSP then reviews your eligibility.
  3. Once approved, you have one year to take and pass the exam.
  4. Buy the exam (US$350 for a single attempt at the time of checking — see BCSP’s Credentials At-A-Glance for current fees), either bundled with the application or afterwards.
  5. Schedule through the single sign-on link to Pearson VUE and sit the computer-based exam at a test centre. Results are available as soon as you submit.
  6. If you need a retake, the next attempt must be at least six weeks after the last one.

Exam preparation

  1. Download the ASP exam blueprint and build your study plan around its domain weightings.
